Where barefoot mail carriers once strode the sand — part of a regular route between Palm Beach and Miami— this South Florida town is now a residential paradise. Homes sit near the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal Waterway, which bound Highland Beach on either side. In fact, there are more square feet of water than land in Highland Beach, making it ideal for fans of a water-based lifestyle. Yamato Rock, a meteor-like limestone outcropping right off the shore, is popular for fishing and snorkeling.
