This Season at Old School Square Runs Without Its Stage, Because the Crest Theatre Is Still Dark

  • October 15, 2026

None of the dated events on Old School Square's fall calendar this year use a stage indoors. The Delray Beach GreenMarket comes back to the lawn on Oct. 24. Art on the Square sets up along Swinton Avenue in November. On Dec. 1 Santa lights the 100-foot Christmas tree in front of the historic school buildings. The indoor events are in the Vintage Gym and the Cornell Art Museum's galleries. The campus's theater, the Crest Theatre auditorium, has nothing scheduled, and the city's own planning papers explain why.

The Crest has been closed for years, and the work that would reopen it is still in the design stage. Until that work is finished, downtown Delray's cultural season will keep running on the lawn, in the amphitheatre, along Swinton Avenue, in the gym and in the galleries.

The Stage at the Center of the Campus Has Been Quiet for Years

The Crest Theatre was built in 1925 and was part of the Delray High School campus until 1949. The City of Delray Beach bought the property in March 1988, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places that same year. A 1993 renovation turned the auditorium into a venue for local organizations, schools and community groups.

According to a design proposal from the architecture firm M+Sa, filed with the city, "the auditorium and backstage spaces have been unused for several years." The proposal says performance equipment was taken out when a prior tenant left, which "reduced the City's ability to utilize the space."

On Feb. 3, 2026, the City Commission saw design options and said it preferred the one the proposal calls Option 2. According to the proposal, that option "provides the greatest flexibility and potential for future use and income." Commissioners also said they preferred a tension wire grid over the catwalk, and an exterior side addition for accessible staff and patron access to the stage instead of an interior ramp. They named an elevator and better loading access at the back of house as priorities for attracting "a greater range of presenting acts in the future."

The schedule in the same document gives a sense of how long the theater will stay closed. It assumed the project would start in June 2026 and then move through these phases:

  • Design development, 3½ months
  • Construction documents, 4 months
  • Bidding and contract, 4 months
  • Construction contract administration, 14 months

Add the first three phases and the design-and-bidding stretch comes to about 11½ months, which takes it to roughly mid-2027 before the 14 months of construction administration even begin. These are planned lengths, not set dates, and the city has not announced a reopening date. The project is listed on the city's facility directory as Crest Theatre Auditorium Renovations, project 25-001.

The theater is only part of the work on campus. The city's FY2027–31 capital plan asks for $458,500 in FY2027 for the grounds: new lighting and historically appropriate doors in place of the current roll-up doors. The plan calls that amount the remaining balance of a $500,000 CRA allocation. It is a request in a proposed plan, so it does not mean the work has started.

So the Season Moves to the Lawn, the Street and the Galleries

Old School Square is city-owned and licensed to the Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority. The DDA handles campus operations, event programming, marketing, exhibitions and special events. The city keeps grounds and facilities maintenance and its own city-sponsored events. Between the two of them, they have filled the calendar through the end of December with events that don't need a theater.

Date Event Where on campus
Sat., Oct. 24 GreenMarket winter season opens, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Old School Square campus
Sat., Oct. 24 15th Annual Witches Ride, 8–11 a.m. Old School Square
Sat.–Sun., Oct. 24–25 Delray Beach Orchid Society's 36th Annual Orchids on the Square Vintage Gym
Sun., Nov. 1 Coco Market Wellness Festival, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Delray Beach Amphitheatre
Sat.–Sun., Nov. 7–8 Art on the Square Fine Art Show Cornell lawn and Swinton Avenue
Wed., Nov. 11 Veterans Day Ceremony, 9–11 a.m. Vintage Gym
Tue., Dec. 1 100-ft Christmas Tree Lighting and Yuletide Street Fair, 6–9 p.m. Campus grounds
Sun., Dec. 6 Chanukah Festival and menorah lighting; Coco Market returns Campus grounds and amphitheatre
Thu., Dec. 10 Cocoa, Cookies & Crafts Campus
Thu., Dec. 24 Christmas Eve service Amphitheatre

The Old School Square events calendar says events are subject to change. The Downtown Delray Beach events calendar has the tree lighting at 7 p.m., during the 6–9 p.m. festival. On the city's Christmas tree page, the Holiday Village season schedule and the Santa house hours were still listed as to be determined as of mid-October.

Opening Saturday Comes Six Days After a Downtown Brunch Closes

The calendar starts the same week a longtime downtown restaurant closes. Park Tavern, at 32 SE Second Ave., is set to close on Oct. 18 after 15 years. The Sun Sentinel reported that the restaurant, best known for its brunches, announced the closing on Facebook on Oct. 6 with this message:

"As we prepare to close our doors, we're raising a glass to the guests, team members and community who made Park Tavern what it is."

The same Sun Sentinel article says Modern Restaurant Group, the company behind Park Tavern, closed nearby Cut 432 earlier this spring. That leaves El Camino on NE Second Avenue as its only restaurant.

The following Saturday, Oct. 24, has two events on the campus. The 15th Annual Witches Ride runs from 8 to 11 a.m., a costumed bike ride with Halloween activities. The GreenMarket opens its 31st winter season at 9 a.m. The Delray Beach CRA started the market in 1996. Its season announcement says more than 70 local growers, makers and food vendors will be there every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through May 22, 2027.

The vendors sell local produce, grass-fed beef, fresh-caught seafood, citrus and tropical fruit, farm eggs, artisan cheese and jams, baked goods, cut flowers and plants. The market also has a food area where vendors cook on site, with seating, and live music runs through the morning. SNAP benefits are accepted. Shoppers swipe their card at the EBT booth and get tokens to spend at the stalls.

Because the market shares the lawn with everything else, some Saturdays will be crowded and some may be canceled. The campus calendar lists the GreenMarket on Nov. 7, the first day of Art on the Square. The CRA says it will post any market closures caused by citywide events on its GreenMarket webpage and social media.

The Galleries Opened Before the Lawn Did

The Cornell Art Museum's fall exhibitions opened weeks before the GreenMarket's first Saturday. On Oct. 1 the museum opened River of Grass, which fills its galleries with woven installations. Twelve artists use fiber, natural materials and large looms to explore the Florida Everglades. Blooming in Color!, a show by Marleen De Waele–De Bock, opened the same night and runs through Jan. 24, 2027.

The Cornell also runs Art on the Square. On Nov. 7–8 the museum's front lawn and Swinton Avenue turn into a juried outdoor show of about 100 fine artists from around the country. The calendar lists a second weekend on Feb. 27–28, 2027. Even the museum's biggest public event of the fall takes place outside.

A Few Blocks Out From the Campus

Outside the campus, downtown has a few new openings this fall.

  • [solidcore] has a grand opening event on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 27 SE 4th Ave., with vendors, giveaways and class raffles.
  • Ethereal, at 324 NE Third Ave., #1, is a fine-dining restaurant with chef Estuardo Mira and designer Nick Alain, according to Boca Magazine's September report.
  • Arts Warehouse, at 313 NE 3rd St., reopened to the public on June 5 after renovations, the Delray CRA reported. It makes a good second arts stop on the same walk as the Cornell.

The Crest auditorium sits in the middle of all this and will stay closed through the season. The commission's design preferences include a tension wire grid, and it has named an elevator and better loading access as priorities for drawing a wider range of presenting acts. Until the renovation is done, the campus programs its lawn, its amphitheatre, Swinton Avenue, the Vintage Gym and the Cornell's galleries, and the GreenMarket opens on the lawn at 9 a.m. on Oct. 24.
